Meaning & Purpose : In this section, I will demonstrate all different classification of a film and a group discussion of my final product.
Certification for a movie is very important as it is a guideline for audience. The certification is been divided into different age group according to the content of the film. BBFC is a responsible for national film, TV programme, advert, etc. It has play an important role in movie industry in UK, as it divided all the movie into different age group to guide people for their recommend age to watch the film.
Universal - All ages admitted. There is nothing unsuitable for children aged 4 years and over. May contain infrequent very mild language. May contain very mild sex references and mild violence, if justified by the context.
Parental Guidance - All ages admitted, but some certain scenes can be unsuitable for young children. They should not disturb children aged 8 or older. May contain mild language, sex, drug and moderate violence.
12 / 12A - Suitable for people aged 12 and older. It is illegal to supply a video work with a 12 certificate to anyone under that age. May contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong language, violence and sex. Sexual activity may be portrayed but without any strong detail. Sexual violence may be shown if discreet and justified by context. Use of very strong language may be permitted based on frequency and how they are used.
15 - Suitable only for people aged 15 and older. No under 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. It is illegal to supply a video work without a 15 certificate to anyone under that age. May contain adult themes,drugs, strong language, strong violence and strong sex. Sexual violence may be shown if discreet and justified by context. Use of very strong language may be permitted based on frequency and how they are used.
18 - Only suitable for people aged 18 or older. No under 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema. It is illegal to supply a video work with an 18 certificate to anyone under that age. Films under this category do not have limitation on foul language. Hard drugs are generally allowed, sexual activity are also allowed. Scenes of strong real sex may be permitted if justified by the context. Very strong, gory, and/or sadistic violence is usually permitted. Strong sexual violence is permitted.
Restricted 18 - Can only be supply only to adults, and it is illegal to supply a film with this rating by mail order. Works under this category always contain hard-core pornography, sexual stimulation, real sexual activity, strong fetish material or sight of certain acts such as triple simultaneous penetration and snowballing. There remains a range of material that is often cut from the R18 rating: strong images of injury in BDSM or spanking works, urolagnia, scenes suggesting incest even if staged, references to underage sex or childhood sexual development and aggressive behaviour such as hair-pulling or spitting on a performer are not permitted. More cuts are demanded in this category than any other category.
Questionnaire
I had set a questionnaire after people had watched my movie. The feedback of the questionnaire will help me to determine the age certification and improvement for my movie.
Below is the footage was the discussion between I and my classmates about the age certification of my short movie. The majority of my classmates thinks my movie should be rated as Universal, as it don't have contain mild violence, inappropriate behaviour and language. The storyline and message behind the movie is very easy to understand. This is the reasons why most of them had rate my movie as U - universal. Afterwards, they also gave me feedback about the adjustment of audio & colour, storyline of my movie.
