P3(d) Linking Audio to Visuals and Applying Audio Effects

Meaning & Purpose : In this section, I will show how I apply different sound effect and fin adjustment to improve the audio quality. 

In my short movie, I didn't applied any music at the background to build up the tension of the storyline. However, I did applied some sound effect such as the teleport sound and group talking sound etc. Instead of using a microphone or software to record and generate the sound effect, I had chose to download it from internet.

The website I had found ( https://www.freesound.org/browse/tags/sound-effects/ ) had full load of different sound effect which is free to let people to download it. Every sound effects are copyright free. I had then download a few sounds clips that I think will be appropriate to be use in my movie.

Sound Effect

At the beginning of the movie, I had a scene that had a cricket ball with pan shot. As the cricket ball is the main object that how the actor discover the existence of teleport in his wardrobe, therefore I decided to add a teleport sound effect at the background. I had downloaded a sound effect which works perfectly at background.

First, I had drag on the soundtrack directly to the audio track. Then I had turned on the "level" which allowed me to add keyframe on the sound track. I had added lots of keyframe at the beginning and the end of the audio, which allowed me to adjust the level of volume.

At the very beginning of the audio, I had nearly mute the audio and volume goes up progressively. When the sound effect nearly finish and ready for the next scene, I had then decreased the volume gently and it reaches zero at the end. The whole sound track fade in and fade out naturally at the beginning.

Audio Mixer 

I had also applied sound effect in the middle of my movie. As the actor discover there is a teleport hole in his wardrobe which connect to others people room. I think it will be appropriate to apply human voice effect which not only the objects can be teleport, sound can be teleport though as well. The sound effect not only build up effect for the movie, it also helps audience understand what is going on in that section.

I was able to find a few soundtracks from the website, I had then downloaded those 3 audios and placed it under the section where I want to be apply. I had placed those sound effects in 3 different audio track which helps to adjust to volume output easily.

To ensure audience  able to listen those sound effect. I decided to mute background noise which recorded by the camera while I did my filming.  First, I had selected the track that I want it to be mute through audio mixer. In my premiere pro, the background noise is "Audio 2",  I  then had dragged  down the volume to -30.
